Even though Verizon is the largest telecommunication provider in the United States, its services are poor.
It’s been more than a year now since we terminated Verizon’s services. But we have been constantly receiving strange calls from different collection agencies, bawling at us that we owe Verizon US$807.26.
On July 1, 2011, we applied to Verizon for our office’s telecommunication and wireless services. A technician from Verizon arrived at our office on July 14 for installation. However, Bobby, the technician, told us that he could not do so unless there was a wire hooked up from the staircase into our office. And that is an extra charge.
He then lowered his voice and said, “Verizon charges this so high, almost US$2,000. If you pay me, you only need to pay half. And I will get it done for you.” And it had to be in cash, he said.
We ignored Bobby’s offer as we didn’t think this was proper. Then, he just casually hung a wire from the ceiling, leaving it dangling in the middle of our office, and simply disappeared.
We called his phone but couldn’t reach him. So we brought our complaint to the call center of Verizon and highlighted the work that was left undone by Bobby.
Verizon never got back to us, nor did they send another technician to complete the work. Without phone lines and wireless network, our office couldn’t operate. Two weeks had gone by, reluctantly, we called Bobby and left a voice message, saying that we would pay him cash if he could get the job done.
Bobby showed up 5 minutes after we left him the message and installed the wireless router in our office. However, the works stopped again by the national Verizon’s Union strike which lasted for 2 weeks. No one from Verizon ever came. The landlines were left untouched.
We waited in vain for a couple days and finally decided to terminate the service with Verizon. On August 22, we called Verizon to request the termination. The representative told us they would process our request. Meanwhile, we did the wiring by ourselves. We also chose Time Warner’s services instead.
But Verizon did not send us any confirmation about our cancellation request.
On September 12, we decided to email Verizon to ensure that our request had been granted. But two days later, a representative called Mario said she needed more information to finish the cancellation. We passed all the necessary information to Mario immediately.
But we did not hear back from Verizon until September 19. Verizon confirmed our cancellation through email. That was almost a month since we first made our cancellation request.
On September 27, we received an invoice from Verizon. But to this date, we maintain that we won’t pay Verizon because Verizon’s technician had never completed the installation in our office.
From then on, we have been constantly harassed by calls from various collection agencies hired by Verizon. These callers sound like gangsters. One of them threatened that if we don’t pay, they would come and confiscate our office equipment’s. Then we received a letter from a collection agency, telling us that if we pay, they can give us a discount. We urge Verizon to please show more respect to its customers and to stop using other parties to threaten us. (Jianmin Ren/ Joanna Law)
